UPDATED May 18th, 2007: I updated all the links and info for 2007.
Thanks to a tip from my friend Newton, we now have a free way to watch movies (although only G and PG ones) this summer. While they’re geared towards kids and families, I think it also works for cash-strapped entrepreneurs looking for low-cost entertainment. Here’s a rundown:
- Regal Cinemas: Free G & PG movies at 10AM Tues and Wed. 1st come, 1st serve.
- AMC Theatres: Free G & PG movies at 10:00AM Wed. Advance group tickets available (up to 1 week ahead)
- Cinemark: 10 shows for $5, or $1 per show. G and PG movies.
- Crown Theatres: Free on Thursdays at 10AM.
- Dickinson Theatres: 10 summer movies for $7.
- Consolidated Theatres: $1 childrens shows. Mostly east coast.
They aren’t the summer blockbusters, but if you need to get out of the house, it’s the right price…and boy do I need to get out of the house

If you want to go to free movies, another idea is to check this website. They frequently invite you to free movie screenings. I don’t know if they have screenings all over the country, but obviously, there are plenty in LA…
Ooh very cool site. Thanks for the tip Olivier!
This is a good idea. free movies will get people going to the movies, and maybe the cinemas can simply whack a bunch’o'ads a the front.
having said that.. why do all cinemas run a *consistent* amount of ads at the front of movies. I don’t rock up on time so i can miss out… be much better (for them) if they changed the ads from 1 ad to a dozen.. so the movie-goer will rock up on time, not to miss the movie (in case there is only 1 ad)
for that matter.. i wonder why tv stations don’t do that?
you would be less inclined to go make a sanwich in the ad break if the ad break had a possibility of only being 30 seconds long.
It is a smaller chain, but the one I work for, Georgia Theatre Company, does free summer kiddie shows with discounted concessions. Two shows twice a week (Tues. and Thurs. 10 am) all summer. The newest film we’ll be playing is Nanny McPhee, but if you have kids it’s cheap place to take ‘em while they’re off school.
I’d comment on what the user Keith said, but frankly, I can’t make out what he is (or is not) complaining about. If he’d like to clarify, I’d be more than happy to explain.
Keith makes a good point about how it seems illogical to always show a *consistent* length of ads for both movies and TV shows. I guess for movies it makes sense because there’s a limited number of seats, so those who want the best seats make the tradeoff to go early for a good seat but also exposure to ads. But for TV nowadays with DVRs reducing the amount of advertisement viewership in general, it seems that having commercial breaks of random lengths would allow for a better chance of some commercials getting decent exposure.

[...] Coming soon to a theater near you – Free movies this summer! – Want to see free movies? Who doesn’t. [...]
This idea is great but after reviewing the offerings the “kids” they need to keep out of trouble are not going to want to watch these “free” movies. If their intent is to give the stay home parents and sitters something to do then great but this attempt will only keep the smaller children away from the trouble makers while they roam the streets. Open it up to PG-13 afternoon showings and they would accomplish something.
